What the Tip calculator does

A tip calculator quickly works out a gratuity and splits the total bill evenly across your group. It removes the awkward mental math at the table and lets you choose whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount.

How the calculation works

The tip is a percentage of either the pre-tax bill or the after-tax total, depending on your preference. The tip and tax are added to the bill, and the result is divided by the number of people.

Formula

Tip = Tip base × tip %. Total = Bill + Tax + Tip. Per person = Total ÷ Number of people.

What your results mean

An $80 bill with 8% tax and an 18% tip on the pre-tax amount adds $14.40 tip and $6.40 tax, totaling $100.80 — about $50.40 each for two people.

Limitations: Tipping norms vary by country and service type. In some places a service charge is already included.

Frequently asked questions

Both are common, and it is largely a matter of preference. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is slightly more traditional, since the tip rewards service rather than the government's tax, and it results in a modestly smaller tip. Tipping on the post-tax total is simpler because you can apply the percentage to the final bill, and it gives a bit more to the server. The difference is usually small. This calculator lets you choose either basis so the tip matches your preference. For larger bills the choice matters a little more, so pick whichever feels fair to you.
